picking a “best” or even representative twelve from Evans’ major years (which i’d put at late Fifties to maybe his father’s death—too much introspection and repetition after that), is a pretty thankless task. any fan of Jazz piano likely could put forward a different dozen, but i’d just like to add my two cents for the near-perfect album Explorations, another with LaFaro even though it’s a studio set. not quite the Vanguard live intertwining magic, but still worth anyone’s listening time. |
