Not including anything from the Lather Sessions on this list is a puzzling oversight. The Purple Lagoon is probably the jazziest thing Zappa ever recorded. Re-Gyptian Strut, Duke of Orchestral Prunes, The Ocean is the Ultimate Solution are also more than worthy for inclusion on this list. Since none of them are here, I can’t help but question the author’s knowledge of the Zappa discography. |

In fact, one of my twelve selections (“Down in De Dew”) is from Lather. |

I guess I should have re-read the article more carefully. Down in the Dew is indeed from Lather. Sorry to question your knowledge of the discography. I do however find it odd that nothing from the original Sleep Dirt (Zappa’s last truly jazzy LP) appears and also find it odd that guitar solos were picked over something like The Purple Lagoon. To each his own I guess. |

I enjoyed your article, you’ve given me some things to go back and listen to. What always strikes me a about Zappa is that he lists Stravinsky and Varese as his major influences yet the more I listen to jazz the more I see its influence on Zappa. Although I guess Eric Dolphy’s Memorial Barbecue is a nod of some sorts. What do you think? |
