Ralph Towner & Pat Metheny

Maybe someone out there can help me. I’ve been listening more critically to Metheny’s nylon-string guitar work and it struck me that a duet album with Ralph Towner has amazing potential. I may be missing something but I don’t believe this has been done yet. Does anyone out there know for certain? Have they played together in any other context or with other guitar combinations? Would you like to see this happen? Thanks :-) |

I’ve been wishing for a Towner-Metheny collaboration for at least 15 years. I would want the tunes to be Towner’s, though. Metheny is a good composer but Towner is on a different level entirely. And such a project would have to take advantage of all the instruments they play. Just acoustic guitars would be too limiting. They both played on the Collin Walcott Memorial concert at Irving Plaza in 1985, but I’m not sure if they played together or not at the gig. I have a recording of that show somewhere, I need to check. They’ve certainly met and have many friends in common, of course, so such a project wouldn’t be so unlikely to happen. I could imagine an excellent gig of Towner-Metheny-Steve Rodby. |

I’d have to agree on the opinion that Towner’s compositions are stronger than Metheny’s, in my opinion. Also, I’d have a problem with the both of them recording on acoustic guitars. What makes Towner’s duets with Abercrombie so vibrant is the distinct difference between Towner’s acoustic guitar and Abercrombie’s electric guitar. Sure, they play a couple of acoustic duets on SARGASSO SEA but for the most part, the recording is acoustic/electric and that works just fine for me. In fact, while I appreciate and admire both Towner and Metheny immensely, I’m not so sure that a collaboration between Towner and Metheny could top that duo album. One man’s humble opinion… |
