I’m very impressed by all the young talent out there (just spend some time on YouTube). This thread is dedicated to the most impressive players for their age. My first nominee is the guitarist – now studying at Berklee in Boston and doing gigs in NYC – Julian Lage. Check out his myspace page. Also, of particular note, and second nominee, is the piano player in Julian’s band, Taylor Eigsti. My guess is these guys have a combined age of 40. Yikes!

Any others come to mind?

Although certainly beyond the still-in-college-generation… Ben Allison is a young-ish (around 40), undersung musician.

His albums are all complete statements, each different from the other. The music is very listenable, but not cookie-cutter. He’s a discerning, deliberate composer and bandleader.

Very good listening.

I’ve been listening to an amazing band from Austria called Helicopter 111 led by a young drummer named Kukas Konig.

I’ve been following the career of a young Vancouver guitarist, Gordon Grdina. He recently recorded a CD with Gary Peacock and Paul Motian on the Songlines label.

The last round of new Riverwalk shows produced in San Antonio featured 2 20-somethings: trumpeter/vocalist Bria Skonberg from Vancouver and clarinetist Dave Bennett from Michigan. Both are playing a lot of dates these days and they did great work for us.

I’ve tracked down and listened to most all the aforementioned players. All very good. Thanks for the tips.
Here’s a young talent worth hearing. A twelve year old violinist playing jazz in the swing vain. His name is Jonathan Russell and he’s quite good. Check this performance out:

Here’s another young female singer that I stumbled upon. I believe she’s 21 and from Australia. She can be heard at her site www.rachelpricesings.com

Worth investigating!

How about a female vocalist that also is a Ray Brown influenced bass player of considerable acclaim.

Kristen Korb is her name. A Vocalist, Bassist and Educator in one. Ultimately a very pleasant, if not overwhelming, addition to the world of jazz.
