<body>I say great job, Mr.E., Dexterously joining a chronological history of the man with a wide-ranging, and excellent, selection of cuts to represent aspects and periods of his long career. I've inDexed this Dozens for future reference.</body>

<body>i quite like the Dozens as an idea (and wouldn't a list of the top 12 versions of the real Dozens be worth compiling?), but some just may not merit the attention paid. this one, finely selected and written, still leaves me wanting more (yeah, i know: always leave 'em wanting more)--like a dozen good selections from each Sonny rather than a paltry, faltering one. maybe it's that the concept is too big to be subsumed so casually? oh, and what about Sonny Murray, certainly better known than a couple of these worthies?</body>

<body>picking a "best" or even representative twelve from Evans' major years (which i'd put at late Fifties to maybe his father's death--too much introspection and repetition after that), is a pretty thankless task. any fan of Jazz piano likely could put forward a different dozen, but i'd just like to add my two cents for the near-perfect album Explorations, another with LaFaro even though it's a studio set. not quite the Vanguard live intertwining magic, but still worth anyone's listening time.</body>

<body>I confess I'm not a big fan of the funky pop years of Ramsey Lewis, but way back in the late Fifties or early Sixties, I was persuaded to buy one of his excellent early jazz albums on Argo (as I recall)--titled An Hour with the Ramsey Lewis Trio, and offering the then-gimmick of nearly 30 minutes per side, played by the original (and better) RL three. Sound was just fine, in fact, and the playing and arrangements were top-notch, a terrific mix of ballads and more up-tempo tumes.

My copy wore out after some years and I sold it away, figuring to pick up a replacement eventually... That was too many years ago; I never see the vinyl (or it's as trashed as mine got), and have also never seen a CD. Anyone have any suggestions? I've always thought this 60-minute, true Jazz album, with Eldee Young and (I forget) was a prime candidate for CD issue. Did I just miss it along the way?</body>
